Avelo Airlines will shift flight times, change its taxiing procedures and add off-site parking at New Haven’s Union Station in response to neighborhood concerns, Tweed New Haven Airport officials announced Wednesday.
Flights from Tweed, on the border between New Haven’s East Shore neighborhood and East Haven, will now start no earlier than 6 a.m., with that time set to shift to 6:30 a.m. later in the year. Avelo flights will no longer leave after 11 p.m. and arrivals will stop after midnight except in extraordinary circumstances such as weather delays.
The changes came as part of a “voluntary agreement” secured on Tuesday between Avelo, airport management and city officials, Tweed Executive Director Sean Scanlon said. The airline and airport operator Avports were eager to allay resident concerns as Avelo routes multiply and passenger totals continue to grow, he added.
“We're doing it for both our customers and the citizens of New Haven,” Scanlon said.
Scanlon and other airport and city officials gathered Wednesday at Union Station to announce the changes, which include a new $10-per-day parking deal for Avelo passengers at the station along with a dedicated Tweed shuttle. With high levels of traffic from Avelo, parking lots at Tweed have been filling up in addition to creating traffic concerns in surrounding residential areas.
“Soon people will be able to take the train – whether it’s on the Shoreline or Metro North – to Union Station and then take the shuttle directly to Tweed New Haven Airport,” New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said. “We're trying to make a lot more options for people that will ease up a little bit on the parking demands in the airport itself.”
As of July 1, passengers can book a parking spot at Union Station and get on the shuttle, which takes as little as 9 minutes to get to Tweed, depending on traffic conditions. LAZ Parking will manage the 14-person shuttle buses, which can be booked at parkhvn.com. Parking at Union Station as part of the airport deal costs $10 per day.
Avelo’s 737-700 airplanes will also change their procedures when taxiing on Tweed’s runways to minimize noise and fumes. The planes will use only one engine when traveling on the ground or tap into an alternate power source, Scanlon said.
The Tweed changes were first announced Tuesday night to residents living near the airport at a East Shore community meeting and came in response to complaints about noise, fumes and traffic, Elicker said.
Tweed’s expansion has come with some “growing pains,” Elicker said. “We’ve been working really hard to respond to that.”
