It’s been a year since Avelo Airlines took flight for the first time in November 2021 from its new base at Tweed-New Haven Airport, and since then, the airline has seen significant growth in destinations and passenger volume.
On Thursday, Avelo celebrated this one-year anniversary on the tarmac outside Gate 2, with city, state and company officials in attendance.
Avelo Founder, Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy gave a progress report on how the airline has grown in just one year.
“In 12 short months we’ve transformed Tweed from a sleepy single-destination airport into a vibrant gateway to 14 destinations spanning seven states,” Levy said.
Levy said in its first year of operation at Tweed, Avelo has reached major milestones, including surpassing 5,000 flights, which Levy said represents a 130% increase from the scheduled commercial flights at Tweed in 2019, which was the last full year of pre-COVID pandemic air travel. Avelo also flew its 600,000th customer, representing a 1,400% increase in Tweed passenger volume.
In addition, Levy said Avelo’s first-year capital investment at Tweed has topped $100 million, in part by creating 300 new jobs, adding six new aircraft, supporting more than 100 local and state community organizations and events and contributing to both the local and state economies with taxes, fuel and related expenses.
Avelo has also doubled its original six Florida destinations to 14 destinations spanning seven states, which include Charleston and Hilton Head, South Carolina to Savannah, Georgia and Nashville, Tennessee. The additional destinations were made possible by Avelo doubling the number of aircraft in its fleet based at Tweed. All flights at Avelo are also non-stop.
Governor Ned Lamont said Avelo’s success in its first year is contributing to a stronger economy.
“Easier and reliable travel from Tweed helps expand access to the New Haven region, not only for casual travelers but also for businesses that are relying on this service as a means of enhancing their growth, which leads to a stronger economy and more jobs in the region,” Lamont said.
Mayor Justin Elicker echoed similar sentiments.
“Since the inaugural Avelo flight one year ago, Tweed’s growth has solidified the airport’s standing as a viable, long-term transportation asset and economic engine for the New Haven community, the region, and now the state,” Elicker said.
In addition to its base at Tweed-New Haven, Avelo operates three other airline bases, in Los Angeles, Orlando, and Wilmington, with flights to 34 destinations across the U.S.
