Avelo plans to suspend Charlotte route at Bradley Airport

Contributed Avelo Airlines offers several routes from Bradley International Airport.

Avelo Airlines plans to suspend flights on another route it recently added at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks.

The Houston-based airline confirmed to Hartford Business Journal on Monday that it plans to suspend flights on its route to Charlotte/Concord, North Carolina, at the end of March.

That would become the third recently added route to be suspended, following its decision in December to suspend flights to Houston and Orlando/Lakeland, Florida.

Avelo launched flights on all three routes from Bradley in November, with each initially available only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

James Olson, a spokesperson for Avelo, said in an email that the routes “did not meet our expectations.”

He noted that Avelo will continue to offer nonstop service to all three destinations from Tweed-New Haven Airport.

“We have said from the start that we established our presence at (Bradley) to primarily serve international destinations,” Olson said, adding that there is no customs/immigration capability at Tweed.

He did not provide any additional information about the performance of the three routes from Bradley.

The Houston, Orlando/Lakeland and Charlotte/Concord routes were among seven launched by Avelo at Bradley in November. The airline said it will continue to serve five nonstop destinations from the Windsor Locks airport, including Daytona Beach, Florida; Wilmington, North Carolina; Cancun, Mexico; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and, beginning in February, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

In all, Avelo operates 37 routes from Connecticut, including Bradley and Tweed-New Haven.

The Connecticut Airport Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
