Sterling Engineering in Barkhamsted will carry out work on a $33 million contract to manufacture components for the military’s CH-53K King Stallion helicopter program.

Sterling’s parent company, Air Industries Group, said the seven-year deal supports one of the Department of Defense’s highest priority initiatives, and called it a “significant milestone” for the company.

The helicopter, made by Stratford-based Sikorsky, has been developed to deploy and support troops in island and coastal environments. It is the U.S. Marine Corps’ most advanced heavy-lift helicopter, and will replace the existing CH-53E Super Stallion fleet.

Air Industries says the contract will enable it to rapidly scale up production.

“We will be investing in several pieces of new equipment necessary to manufacture the projected volume of product,” said Lou Melluzzo, CEO of Air Industries Group. “The continued investment in Connecticut will ensure that we keep ahead of customer demands and create a state-of-the-art facility.”

Air Industries products include landing gears, flight controls and engine mounts.
