Battery-tech startup inks R&D deal

Wilton-based Cadenza Innovation, which is developing electric vehicle battery designs, said it has signed a research and development agreement with an Australian company that owns a massive graphite mine in Mozambique.

Cadenza, which is led by battery entrepreneur Christina Lampe-Onnerud (who has served on Syrah’s board since last year), said the arrangement with Syrah Resources will help it develop graphite anode technology for use in lithium-ion-based batteries.

Syrah is developing the world’s largest graphite mine, according to Mining Review.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Cadenza described it as long term and said Syrah’s downstream processing facility in Louisiana is integral to the deal.

Cadenza said anticipated higher demand for electric vehicles will lead to a 65-fold growth in demand for graphite anodes by 2030. Development in grid storage could increase demand even further, the company said.
