The Big Y grocery store chain is expanding in Connecticut.
The Springfield, Mass.-based grocer on Thursday is debuting a new store in Brookfield, at 14 Candlewood Lake Road. Later this summer, it will open a new store in Middletown, at 850 South Main St. And in the fall, it will debut a store in Westport, at 1076 Post Road East.
The Brookfield and Westport locations were originally set to be Amazon Fresh grocery stores, but those plans did not come to fruition.
The Big Y in Middletown is a new construction project, which should be open for business in late June or early July, the company said.
Big Y announced in January that it also acquired a gas and convenience store at 342 Washington Ave., in North Haven, across the street from the Big Y supermarket there.
The new stores, plus another one planned for Uxbridge, Mass., will give Big Y 77 locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Each store will have more than 100 new employees, from cashiers and baggers, to managers, deli, seafood, produce and kitchen workers.
