Bill would increase renewable standards

CNN Connecticut utilities would be required to purchase 50 percent of their energy from Class I energy sources like wind and solar by 2030, under a newly proposed bill.

A bill in the state legislature proposes to more than double over a decade the amount of renewable energy utilities are required to purchase each year.

Under current law, Connecticut’s so-called Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) increases each year until 2020, when it will peak at 27 percent, of which 20 percent would be from the cleanest “Class I” sources like solar and wind. In 2017, the RPS stands at 22.5 percent, with Class I at 15.5 percent.

Meanwhile, Class II and III sources include trash-to-energy, combined heat and power, and other technologies.

Under a bill introduced by Rep. Matt Lesser (D-Middletown) Connecticut would increase its Class I requirement to 50 percent by 2030.

The bill has been referred to the Joint Committee on Energy & Technology.
