New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 33 employees were killed at work in Connecticut in 2023, down one from 34 in 2022, or 2.9%.
Of the fatalities in 2023, 30 were men and three were women. Three of the deaths involved violent acts; 14 occurred as a result of a transportation accident.
Eight workers died as a result of slips and falls, and four died from exposure to harmful substances or environments, according to the data.
Four people died from contact with objects and equipment in their workplace.
Of the occupational deaths, 11 workers were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 10 workers were between 35 and 44.
Thirty of the fallen workers worked in private industry; three worked in the government.
There were 10 deaths in the industry of construction, two in retail trade, five in transportation/warehousing, seven in administrative and waste services, and one in accommodation and food services.
Connecticut’s worker fatality rate was 2 deaths per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers in 2023. Nationally, the rate was 3.5 deaths per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers.
Overall, fatalities among U.S. workers totaled 5,283 in 2023, down 3.7% from the prior year.
