Bridgeport-based law firm Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder won the Public Justice award for Trial Lawyer of the Year at the 41st annual Public Justice gala Monday night in Philadelphia for its nearly $1.5 billion victory against Alex Jones.

Each year, the nonprofit legal advocacy group Public Justice presents the award to the attorney or firm that made the “greatest contribution to the public interest within the past year by trying or settling a precedent-setting, socially significant case.”

Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder represented the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims in a defamation case against Jones for promoting false conspiracy theories about the massacre.

In October 2022, a jury awarded the plaintiffs $965 million in compensatory damages. The court later added punitive damages that brought the total damages to $1.44 billion – the largest defamation verdict in U.S. history.

“I am proud that Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder has been named Trial Lawyer of the Year for our work bringing justice to these plaintiffs, who have experienced years of pain and suffering at the hands of Jones and his followers,” said Josh D. Koskoff, a partner.

The firm also won a landmark case against Remington Arms, the company that made and marketed the assault-style weapon used in the shooting, which resulted in a $73 million settlement for victims’ families. In that case, attorneys showed that Remington’s marketing of the gun violated the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act.

Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder has received national recognition for its work. Earlier this week, Michael Koskoff, who founded the firm with his father, Ted, was posthumously inducted into the American Association of Justice Hall of Fame. Michael Koskoff’s son, Josh, accepted the award on his father’s behalf.

Also, partner Kathleen Nastri received the American Association of Justice Lifetime Achievement Award.
