Bristol Hospital to debut $3.4M senior behavioral care unit
Bristol Hospital is preparing to open its new senior behavioral health inpatient unit to treat patients 65 and over suffering from conditions that include dementia with behavioral health disturbance, depression, severe anxiety, bipolar disorder and psychosis.
The unit, announced last July and costing about $3.4 million, includes 15 beds in private and semiprivate rooms, and covers almost 8,000 square feet on Level F of the hospital, according to filing with the Department of Public Health. A ribbon-cutting was held Tuesday in advance of the opening, which is expected by March 15.
Dr. Genevieve A. Henry, a geriatric psychiatrist who serves as medical director of the unit and joined Bristol Hospital Multi-Specialty Group in January, leads a team of nurses, psychiatric advance practice registered nurses, social workers and therapists who specialize in the care of geriatric patients with behavioral health issues.
“There are a limited number of units like this in Connecticut that are equipped to provide medical and mental health services in a well-integrated, patient-centered setting,” Henry said.
The hospital has been operating a 16-bed adult inpatient psychiatric unit treating adults 18 and older, including geriatric patients. After the senior unit opens, the adult unit will remain open with 16 beds and serve nongeriatric adults.
