Guilford’s Butterfly Network announced Wednesday that it had won a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to provide its handheld ultrasound probe to healthcare workers in Africa.

A total of 1,000 healthcare workers will get the Butterfly iQ+ device as part of an effort to improve the health of mothers and babies, according to a company statement. As part of the grant, 500 probes will be given to practitioners in Kenya and 500 will be distributed in South Africa.

Butterfly Network President and CEO Dr. Todd Fruchterman said, “With this grant, we take another important step toward improving worldwide access to medical imaging and will also demonstrate how mid-level practitioners can meaningfully enhance care for pregnant women and their unborn infants.”

Part of the Gates grant will also be used to speed new maternal and fetal health capabilities within the Butterfly iQ+ mobile application.

Currently located near Jonathan Rothberg’s 4Catalyzer life sciences incubator in Guilford, Butterfly Network announced last year it would move to a new corporate headquarters in Burlington, Mass.

The company went public in a $1.5 billion SPAC deal in 2020.
