The curtain will rise next month on the expansion of a local theater in East Haven.
A performance and grand opening of Cabaret on Main, located at 597 East Main St., will take place Sept. 17 for invited guests, the theater community and members of the media.
Billy DiCrosta and Neil Fuentes, the theater directors who founded the New Haven Academy of Performing Arts in 2013, said Cabaret on Main is the latest installment of its expanded theater concept.
The new theater and expansion of the original New Haven Academy of Performing Arts space features a 1,550-square-foot performance space with surround sound, lighting, and projection mapping visual art capabilities, according to DiCrosta and Fuentes.
The venue has the capacity for traditional theater seating of 100-plus, as well as a cabaret-style experience with tables and chairs.
Cabaret on Main will also serve as the new home for the duo’s new nonprofit theater company Broadway on Main, as a host for other theater companies throughout the state. It will also function as a multicultural center for the arts and LGBTQIA programs.
“New Haven Academy of Performing Arts, Cabaret on Main and Broadway on Main will be a vibrant performing arts hub that will showcase the colorful beauty of Connecticut’s diverse population, “ said DiCrosta and Fuentes. “Ours will be a center for theater arts that welcomes participation and involvement through programs for and led by our multiple cultures, our LGBTQIA community and by any and all who want to share their talent, stories and ideas with an ever-growing audience.”
DiCrosta, an East Haven native, is a singer and actor who has performed in multiple productions across Connecticut. After studying at Western Connecticut State University and Hart Conservatory, DiCrosta found his niche on the high seas, performing as a headliner on cruise ships around the world.
Fuentes is a well-known chef who has been featured on the Food Network, Food Channel, Telemundo and more. His dream of producing and directing theatrical shows began at age 6 when he was a music and dance student in his native Venezuela. He came to the U.S. in 1995 and since 2014 has been acting, directing and producing alongside DiCrosta.
The duo said the new theater space will help fill a lack of art space and art education programs in East Haven. Broadway on Main will offer scholarship assistance for qualified kids and teens who wish to study the performing arts, but lack the resources to do so. It will provide professional theater education and performance opportunities in a safe, supportive, bilingual environment to youth and adults of the Greater New Haven Community, according to DiCrosta and Fuentes.
