Campbell Soup plans to lay off 76 workers between this summer and fall 2025 as it prepares to close its Norwalk office, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing with the state Department of Labor.
As announced Jan. 18, Campbell Soup will close its corporate office at 595 Westport Ave. in Norwalk as it consolidates at its Camden, New Jersey headquarters.
There are currently 154 employees at the Norwalk office, according to the filing.
The closure is expected to occur in three phases, with the first in September 2023 and another in November 2023, with the final phase, when the office permanently closes, in summer/fall 2025.
Some employees will be relocated to other offices or work remotely; about 44 will lose their jobs, most of whom opted not to relocate, according to the notice.
About 32 employees will continue working at the Norwalk office until the closure is completed. Some may relocate to Camden.
Employees leaving the company due to the closure will be eligible for severance and other benefits, the company said.
The layoffs aren’t expected to affect employees of Campbell’s Pepperidge Farm bakery in Bloomfield, which the company previously said planned to add jobs this year.
Campbell plans to spend about $50 million upgrading its Camden facilities, which will house more than 1,600 employees, the company said.
The project involves upgrading existing space, improving workspaces and constructing new buildings with amenities, including on-site daycare, a cafe, health and fitness center, and other services. Construction was expected to start in March.
In a previous statement, Campbell’s President and CEO Mark Clouse said, “Unifying the company in one headquarters increases connectivity, collaboration and provides enhanced career opportunities for our team.”
