Online auto retailer Carvana will soon be able to use an existing distribution hub along John Fitch Boulevard in South Windsor as a vehicle pickup site for new customers.
Carvana has leased the 13 John Fitch Blvd. site from property owner David Caron of Westerly, R.I. since 2017 as a “last-stop” hub for vehicles purchased online through Carvana.com.
This site is among a network of delivery hubs used as the last stop before an online-purchased vehicle is transported to the customer for delivery.
Current on-site activities include office uses, minor detailing and vehicle loading and unloading.
Typically, a vehicle bought through Carvana.com is loaded onto a single-car hauler from the hub and driven to the customer’s home or office.
Now, Carvana has been granted a special permitted use by the Planning and Zoning Commission that will allow customers to pick up their new vehicles at the South Windsor location.
The move will allow customers to receive their vehicles faster, save on delivery costs and reduce 9-car and single-car hauler traffic in and out of the site, the applicant said.
South Windsor Director of Planning Michele M. Lipe said this may be the first on-site, pickup hub for Carvana in the state.
Carvana will continue other uses at the property such as administrative office operations and car detailing, but there will be no vehicles stored or sold on the property, no vehicle showroom, and all sales will continue to transact online at Carvana.com.
