A 53-year-old Cheshire woman has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for fraud and tax offenses stemming from an embezzlement scheme, according to authorities.
Erin Sullivan, who was the office manager of a family-owned construction business in Orange, made false entries into the accounting system to generate hundreds of checks payment to her or petty cash, authorities said. Then, she would change the reference in the payroll and accounting system to show it had been issued to a different payee.
Also, authorities said Sullivan would generate checks in the name of the company’s owner, forge the owner’s signature and either cash the checks or deposit them into her own bank account.
In total, Sullivan stole $955,960 from her employer, according to authorities.
Further, Sullivan failed to pay $233,738 in federal income taxes on her embezzled income for the 2016 through 2021 tax years.
In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport sentenced Sullivan to three years of supervised release and ordered her to pay restitution of more than $1.17 million.
Sullivan has paid about $640,000 in restitution already.
On Oct. 30, 2023, Sullivan pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of tax evasion.
Sullivan, who is released on a $100,000 bond, will report to prison on April 8.
