Waterbury-based Post University announced Tuesday its purchase by a nonprofit university based in Santiago, Chile.

The Universidad Andres Bello’s acquisition will allow the school to expand its presence internationally, according to a release issued by the school.

Post University traces its roots back to 1890, as a business clerical school. Today, the university hosts about 700 students on its 58-acre campus in Waterbury’s suburban west end, and has around 17,000 additional online students.

Under its previous, for-profit ownership, the school had been a pioneer of online education.

The Chilean university and Post will continue to operate independently, according to Tuesday’s announcement. Post University’s operations, leadership and educational programs will remain unchanged.

“This acquisition between two healthy, growing universities expands the possibilities for our entire community,” said John L. Hopkins, CEO and president of Post University. “Providing expanded educational opportunities for current students, while reimagining higher learning for the next generation, has always been central to our mission.”

The Universidad Andrew Bello was founded in 1988 and claims an enrollment of more than 60,000 graduate and undergraduate students.

“This announcement represents a great opportunity for both universities from the perspective of their development and global reach,” said Julio Castro, President of Universidad Andrés Bello.
