Cigna’s charitable giving arm will begin accepting applications for its new education and workforce development grant initiative next week.

In a statement, officials with the Cigna Foundation said nonprofit organizations will be able to apply for the funds — which are intended to support childhood and adult education and health care projects — starting May 22.

The application period will close June 18, they said.

The grant is being tailored to several specific areas of need, including pre-kindergarten programs focused on improving children’s social and cognitive development; kindergarten through eighth grade programs aiming to help students with literacy, language, mathematics, science and engineering; high school programs meant to introduce students to health care careers; and post-secondary and adult education resources that help participants learn about public health.

“The Cigna Foundation recognizes the important role that education plays in improving people’s lives and supporting overall public health — and we want to partner with nonprofits who share this commitment,” said Cigna Foundation Executive Director Susan Stith.

The foundation said it plans to open the application process again in 2022.
