Express Scripts, the pharmacy benefit management firm owned by Bloomfield-based Cigna and administered as part of its Evernorth segment, is the apparent winner in a competitive bidding process for a three-year pharmacy benefit contract covering West Virginia public employees and retirees.
In a statement released Monday, the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency announced its intent to award the contract to Express Scripts effective July 1, 2022. The agency oversees benefits for roughly 165,000 public workers, retirees, dependents and other eligible state residents, and Express Scripts will administer a comprehensive pharmacy benefit program for them through at least mid-2025.
Financial details of the bidding process were not immediately disclosed.
According to Evernorth, prescription drug claims for the members served by the state’s health care program is estimated at more than $310 million annually.
The West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency is currently with CVS Caremark.
“PEIA requires a pharmacy benefit partner that can address the toughest challenges facing the health of our state employees, retirees and dependents,” said Felice Joseph, the agency’s pharmacy director. “We look forward to working with Express Scripts and will plan a careful and well communicated transition for our members and their families.”
Cigna acquired Express Scripts, which is headquartered in Missouri, for $67 billion in 2018. The Express Scripts business was subsequently folded into Evernorth, Cigna’s health services portfolio, in 2020.
