City firehouse to be named for fallen responder

Hartford's Engine Company 16 Fire Station at 636 Blue Hills Ave. will be renamed for a fallen firefighter who died on duty last October.

The Hartford firehouse in the city’s North End that was base for a city firefighter killed on the job last October is being renamed in his honor.

Hartford City Council voted Monday night to rename Engine Company 16 Fire Station at 636 Blue Hills Ave. for firefighter Kevin Lamont Bell, who succumbed while fighting a house fire just blocks from his station last Oct. 7.

A renaming ceremony will be held at a later date, a city spokeswoman said Tuesday.

There are 12 Fire Houses in Hartford. Along with Engine 15 the Mayor Mike Peters Fire House, named for the late fire fighter who later became mayor, Engine Company 14 on Blue Hills Avenue is named for retired Fire Chief and former Councilman John B. Stewart Jr., the spokeswoman said.

Mayor Pedro E. Segarra hailed it as a fitting tribute to Bell and firefighters everywhere.

“This tragedy is a reminder of the risks our brave men and women take every day to preserve our safety,’’ Segarra said in a statement Tuesday. “Kevin is a Hartford hero who will not be forgotten. Naming Engine 16 after him is one way the city and community can continue to honor his life and memory.’’
