New Haven city officials joined University of New Haven leadership to launch the school’s Marine and Environmental Sciences program along Long Wharf.
The school has entered into a lease with the city to use 7,500 square feet of the 30,000 Canal Dock Boathouse at 475 Long Wharf Drive.
The new site will provide lab space and field experience for 85 UNH students in the program who will study marine biology, policy and environmental science, city and university officials said.
UNH has also committed $2 million for further improvements to the facility for this program.
The Canal Dock Boathouse, which opened in the fall 2018, is owned by the city and managed by the nonprofit Canal Dock Boathouse Inc.
New Haven’s Board of Alders approved the lease agreement in early 2020, and the 10-year lease began in 2023 with an option to extend for another 10 years.
City and school officials said the new revenue stream generated from the lease will help support the boathouse’s overall long-term financial sustainability, while also allowing the facility to continue to be used for public and private events.
