CL&P implements state-of-the-art restoration tool

Superstorm Sandy knocked power out across Connecticut, along with causing flooding and wind damage. The one-year anniversary of the storm is Monday.

Berlin electric utility Connecticut Light & Power is the first in the nation to install a new outage response tool to make damage assessments more efficient and provide real-time data about the materials and resources needed for repairs.

The tool was developed by CL&P and Georgia-based Clearion Software, which combines mapping data with information on the distribution system with street location data.

The software replaces the need for damage assessment patrollers to take notes in the field about damage and restoration material and resources needs, which must be reported back to the office. For example, in Superstorm Sandy one year ago, CL&P had 16,000 locations needing damage assessments.

CL&P plans to have the software implemented system-wide by the end of the year.
