A CNBC report ranking the 75 most valuable college sports enterprises found that UConn’s athletics program is worth $178 million, ranking 71st in the nation.

UConn is the only school that competes in the Big East to make the list.

The report says that UConn’s sports programs generated about $93 million in revenue last year.

UConn basketball tends to garner the most media attention, with the men’s team winning the NCAA championship in both 2024 and 2023. The women’s basketball team has won 11 titles and made the Final Four in 2024.

UConn is also known for its men’s ice hockey, field hockey, baseball and women’s ice hockey programs.

UConn’s football team – typically the most lucrative college sport at large universities – has struggled for many years, but ended the 2024 season with an 8-4 record, and will play in the Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park in Boston on Dec. 28 against North Carolina.

The rankings are dominated by SEC and Big Ten schools, which CNBC attributed largely to the conferences’ media rights deals.

The most valuable college sports program is Ohio State University, worth about $1.32 billion, according to the rankings.

Factors contributing to Ohio State’s top ranking include $280 million in revenue generated in 2023, an alumni base of more than 600,000, a fan base of more than 11 million, boosters that donated nearly $60 million last year and a football team that often attracts crowds of 100,000, according to CNBC.

The information used to compile the valuations came from Jason Belzer, publisher of AthleticDirectorU, who has advised universities on name, image and likeness deals.

The revenue figures are from the Department of Education’s Equity in Athletics Data Analysis and the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for the fiscal year 2023.
