Coastal cleanup hits 44 beaches

A scuba diver picks up garbage along the coast in Connecticut as part of Save the Sound's cleanup.

New Haven nonprofit program Save the Sound organized the cleanup of 44 public beaches this fall as part of International Coastal Cleanup day.

The program from Connecticut Fund for the Environment hit 21 beaches on Saturday and plans on cleaning the other 23 in September and October.

This is the organization’s 12th year of participating in International Coastal Cleanup day, which works with more than 100 countries and all 55 U.S. states and territories to create trash-free seas.

In Connecticut last year, volunteers cleaned 8,756 pounds of trash.
