Communities receive $28M for brownfields

HBJ File Photo New Britain received a $2.7 million grant to turn its former police station into a transit-oriented development near the westernmost terminus of CTfastrak.

The state of Connecticut and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded $27.5 million in grants and loans for 20 Connecticut communities to clean up brownfield sites.

The EPA awarded $500,000 to Bridgeport and New Haven projects while Connecticut awarded $27 million.

Connecticut’s government now has awarded $90 million in brownfield remediation money since 2011, which is almost half of the $190 million the EPA has awarded since 1995. The state awards came from a May application period where Connecticut solicited entries for would-be remediation sites.

Berlin received a $406,057 grant to develop a transit-oriented development near the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail line.

Bridgeport had three developers receive $4.2 million in loans for properties that will be the site of residential units, mixed-use developments, and a charter school.

Hamden’s Economic Development Commission received a $350,000 grant to turn a former school facility into a business incubator.

Killingly received a $2 million grant to turn a textile mill into rental units.

Meriden received a $597,000 grant to develop the Meriden Transit Center.

Montville received a $355,560 grant to remediate a 1.1-acre site for commercial rental spaces.

New Britain’s Grace CME Church received a $350,000 loan to develop an art center, and the city of New Britain received a $2.7 million grant to develop a transit-oriented site at its former police station.

New Haven’s Science Park Development Corp. received a $4 million grant to build a 200-unit residential complex, and the New Haven housing authority received a $833,386 loan to create 32 units of affordable housing.

Norwalk’s Trinity Washington Village received a $1.3 million loan for an 80-unit mixed income rental unit development.

Shelton’s Economic Development Corp. received a $1 million grant for downtown parking.

Stratford received a $2.9 million grant for a transit-oriented development site.

Torrington received a $1 million grant to build a parking lot to encourage pedestrian traffic downtown.

Vernon received a $2 million grant to revitalize an old mill property so a commercial tenant would want to move there.

Waterford received a $525,000 grant to convert the former Cohanzie School into residential rental units.

West Haven received a $2 million grant to turn a former coal terminal into a retail center.

The EPA’s $500,000 awarded went to projects in Bridgeport and New Haven, as part of $3.3 million in grants awarded throughout New England by the EPA.
