Community Foundation of Greater New Britain president to retire at end of 2025

David J. Obedzinski

The president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, David J. Obedzinski, will retire at the end of the year, the organization’s board announced Monday.

Obedzinski, who has worked in the nonprofit sector for 40 years, took his position at the helm of the Community Foundation in August 2017. He is set to retire effective Dec. 31.

During his time at the Community Foundation, he grew the organization’s endowment from $45 million to more than $70 million, according to an announcement.

Also, Obedzinski is credited with starting new initiatives, including capacity-building training for nonprofits, opportunities for young professionals to learn about philanthropy, a disaster response fund and a degree-completion program at Central Connecticut State University, as well as revitalizing the foundation’s Catalyst Giving Circle.

“Dave has been an outstanding leader for the foundation,” said Adam Salina, outgoing board chair. “He strengthened the visibility of this organization during his tenure and made it more relevant within the communities we serve.”

Previously, Obedzinski worked for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association, the Hospital of Central Connecticut at New Britain General, Southern Connecticut State University, The Easter Seal Society of Connecticut, University of Hartford and Hofstra University.

In his retirement, he may consult with nonprofits and teach. He also plans to travel with his wife, Linda, continuing to support the foundation’s Catalyst Giving Circle and the Obedzinski Family Charitable Fund.

A search committee, led by the Community Foundation’s newly elected board chair Janis Jerman, will begin a process to select a new president.

“Dave set a very high bar for the foundation’s leadership,” Jerman said. “The board is committed to recruiting and retaining a successor who will continue this strong momentum.”

The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain was established in 1941 and covers Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. Its mission includes: “to inspire philanthropy, responsibly manage permanent charitable assets effectively and partner to address key community issues through strategic leadership.”
