Construction firms picked for Connecticut River Bridge replacement

Amtrak The Connecticut River Bridge.

Construction companies have been picked to replace the bridge connecting Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, Amtrak officials announced this week, paving the way for the project to begin over the next several months.

Construction companies Tutor Perini Corp., based in Los Angeles, and Torrington-based O&G Industries Inc. were awarded a joint venture construction contract to replace the Connecticut River Bridge, which Amtrak said was originally constructed in 1907.

The bridge is used by Amtrak, CTRail’s Shore Line East and freight trains. The region is part of the Northeast Corridor, which Amtrak said is the country’s busiest rail corridor.

According to information from Tutor Perini, the $1.3 billion project includes building a two-track movable bridge structure equipped with new track, signal, catenary, power, communication, controls and security features along the Northeast Corridor.

In addition to safety upgrades to address the bridge’s current structural deficiencies, the project will modernize the bridge by enhancing vertical clearance possible on it and increase speed capabilities for locomotives.

Most of the project is funded by a $826.6 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration through the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act. The rest of the project is funded by Amtrak and the state, according to project officials.

Work for the project is expected to begin in late summer or early fall, according to Tutor Perini, with “substantial completion” expected in 2031.
