Even though the deadline for businesses and individuals to file their 2019 federal and state income tax returns has been moved back to July 15 in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the people who prepare your tax returns have been deemed just as “essential” as ever before.
In accordance with Gov. Ned Lamont’s Executive Order No. 7H, Connecticut Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firms have been classified as “essential businesses” and can still be visited in person by individuals during the coronavirus pandemic. CPA firms are thus not subject to the governor’s order that all non-essential public places of business close their doors as of 8 p.m. this past Monday.
“Members of the public should understand that their CPAs are there for them during this turbulent time,” said Bonnie Stewart, executive director of the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants (CTCPA). “We appreciate and applaud the leadership of Gov. Lamont and his administration in recognizing that CPAs and the critical services and expertise they provide are essential to the cash flow and financial well-being of Connecticut businesses and residents,” she added.
The statewide trade group represents some 6,000 accountants in public practice, business and industry, government and education.
“Some people need the assistance of a CPA to file their tax returns and pursue the refunds they desperately await, others are looking for their CPA’s help to apply for loans which usually require tax documentation, still other CPAs perform payroll services,” Stewart said. “The CTCPA wants the public to know that Connecticut CPAs will continue to work for and with them, and that while many CPAs are working remotely, those who can’t are indeed deemed ‘essential’ and will continue to serve their existing clients, as well as be available to others in need.”
For those seeking the services of a CPA, the CTCPA offers an online “Find a CPA” service at ctcpas.org/FindACPA.
