Ripley Tools has purchased Canadian GPS sensor technology business Multiwave Sensors, company officials announced.

Cromwell-based Ripley Tools, a tool and test equipment supplier for the wireless, broadband and power utility infrastructure industries, made the acquisition announcement this week but financial details about the purchase weren’t immediately available.

Based in Ontario, Canada, Multiwave Sensors offers “advanced solutions for GPS directional and position measurement used in wireless antenna installation and other markets,” the company said.

Ripley Tools said the move allows the company to offer a broader suite of tools and equipment that simplify antenna installation across all steps of the process. The company said the acquisition complements its 2017 purchase of New Hampshire-based Optical Design Manufacturing.

Ripley Tools said that Multiwave Sensors is one of the largest suppliers of antenna alignment products based on GPS measurements. The company plans to expand the brand with more products targeting wireless test and measurement, it said.

Ripley Tools CEO John Jutila said the acquisition helps the company service the growing cellular phone service market.

"Mobile phone infrastructure continues to undergo a technology transition to '5G', requiring installation and upgrades of antennas along with more robust network and power interconnections and the deployment of hundreds of thousands of new 'small cells' for densification," Jutila said.
