The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Board of Regents passed a resolution Thursday morning that provides additional support to refugees and asylum seekers seeking education at the 17 CSCU institutions.

Under the new policy, CSCU said it will form a working group with officials from each college and university with the goal of establishing formal partnerships with the Department of Social Services and the state’s refugee resettlement agencies to improve access and support available at the state’s public colleges and universities.

The new policy takes effect immediately and the working group is expected to submit its first report in October, officials said.

CCSU President Terrence Cheng said the new policy is essential given the refugee crisis worldwide.

“CSCU is proud to be a leader in access and opportunity,” Cheng said in a statement. “With refugee crises in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Yemen and around the world, we are prepared to work closely with our state partners and resettlement agencies to make it easier for those fleeing atrocities to access higher education.”
