Connecticut State Colleges and Universities administrators will review 24 of the higher education system's programs ahead of the planned consolidation of the state’s 12 community colleges to determine if schools are teaching relevant coursework for in-demand jobs.

The program review will be conducted over the next year through a $350,000 grant from the Lumina Foundation, an Indiana-based nonprofit focused on improving U.S. higher education, said Ken Klucznik, CSCU's associate vice president of academic affairs.

The program review -- which will look at 24 programs in eight of CSCU's schools -- will assess what students are learning, and how it matches with what employers are looking for in workers, Klucznik said.

"The program review is a means to find out what our programs are doing and what they're not doing so well,"  Klucznik said. "One of the things we would like to be able to tell employers is that they can trust that our graduates have these qualities"

The year-long review comes as CSCU prepares to consolidate its community colleges into one entity, which will be known as Connecticut State Community College, that plans to begin enrolling students in the fall 2022 semester. The program review will give CSCU a better idea of alterations the system may make to community college programming ahead of that consolidation, Klucznik said.

CSCU President Mark Ojakian last month said officials from CSCU will meet with the New England Commission of Higher Education, the regional higher education accreditation body, at the end of June to discuss its progress and transition plan for consolidating the state's community colleges.

The system's board of regents named David Levinson as interim president of Connecticut State Community College.
