Connecticut continued to add jobs in the month of September, pushing the state’s unemployment rate down to 4%, according to the state Department of Labor

The national unemployment rate is 3.5%.

Labor officials also said they revised August’s job gains downward by 500 positions to 2,400 new jobs.

Overall, the state added 4,400 jobs in September. The private sector added 2,900 jobs last month across a wide range of industries, while the government sector added 1,500 jobs, according to DOL.

The state has a net 50,000 additional people in the labor force since December 2021. Even still, Connecticut employers reported 113,000 job openings at the end of July.

Despite the growth, Connecticut still has only recovered 89.2% of the 289,400 jobs lost during March and April 2020, when the pandemic temporarily shut down significant parts of the state’s economy. The private sector is 91.9% recovered from the April 2020 COVID employment trough.

And Connecticut’s labor market still lags behind national trends.

Nationally, July of this year marked the full recovery of all jobs lost during the pandemic, nearly two and a half years after it began.
In September, seven of the 10 major industry supersectors generated employment gains, while two declined.

The sectors that gained jobs included:

  • Trade, Transportation & Utilities +200, 0.1%, 298,700
