CT climbs in much-cited CNBC biz ranking

Connecticut has climbed 13 spots in CNBC’s much-cited annual ranking of state business climates.

CNBC’s latest “America's Top States for Business” assigned Connecticut an overall rank of 33rd. That was up from the fifth-worst ranking in 2014.

CNBC now considers Connecticut to be ahead of the New England states of Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine.

The improvement was largely due to an improved score in the workforce category, which is the most heavily weighted in CNBC’s methodology. A measure of education levels, number of available workers, and ability to retain college-educated workers, Connecticut’s workforce score rose from 32nd last year to fourth this year.

CNBC did not give a specific reason for the large jump.

Business groups, such as the Connecticut Business & Industry Association, have used the state’s low ranking as ammunition in the run up to the gubernatorial election last year and during their recent push for the legislature to roll back new business taxes included in the state budget.

CBIA has also cited Forbes’ annual ranking, which comes out towards the end of the year. Forbes’ most recent ranking, released in November, also put Connecticut in 33rd place.
