A state-by-state survey shows Connecticut residents are more frugal than our neighbors when it comes to romantic gifts for Valentine’s Day.

According to a survey by Finder.com, Connecticut spends an average of $45 on gifts. That puts it in the middle of New England states. New Hampshire is the most frugal in the nation at an average of $31. Maine and Vermont spend $36 each, while Massachusetts spends $67 and Rhode Island kicks in $52 towards a gift.

Respondents in Kansas spent the most on their partners on Valentine's Day, with an average spend of $117, followed by Nevada ($112), Idaho ($111), North Dakota ($108), Hawaii ($102), Arkansas ($93), Virginia ($87), Florida ($83), California and South Carolina ($82).

Finder.com, a personal finance comparison and education site, said the longer you’re married the less likely you are to get a gift. Also, those who are in two- to five-year relationship will get the highest valued gifts.

One in three Americans will celebrate by dining out.
