CT hospital assoc. names healthcare heroes

Patricia Fontaine, a pediatric intensive care unit staff nurse at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford, was recently selected by the Connecticut Hospital Association as a 2012 Healthcare Hero. The awards were developed in 2002 to celebrate the invaluable contributions of healthcare workers, both to their field and to the community at large. 

Other awardees in the Greater Hartford area included: Linda Cloutier, operating room nurse, ECHN-Manchester Memorial Hospital; Estrella Marcial, home care aide, hospice, VNA HealthCare Waterbury Region; Kerry McGuire, advanced practice nurse, medical cardiology, Hartford Hospital; Lisa Menillo, director, Hartford Regional Lead Treatment Center and Healthy Homes Program, attending pediatrician, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center; Jeffrey Rosow, dental director, Connecticut Valley Hospital; Christopher Rusate, clinical leader, surgical trauma ICU, Hartford Hospital; Matthew Spates, emergency department physician, The William W. Backus Hospital; and The Hospital for special care first responders.

Travelers recognizes Bakker Agency

The Peter M. Bakker Agency in Avon has been recognized by Travelers Personal Insurance as a top performing partner agency for 2012. Established in 1974, The Peter M. Bakker Agency is an independent insurance agency offering a full range of insurance products including personal automobile, homeowners, business, employee benefits and life insurance.

Attorneys join nonprofit boards

Hartford's Camp Courant, the largest free day camp in the nation, has selected Robinson & Cole tax associate Scott E. Sebastian to serve on its board of directors. Camp Courant serves approximately 700 children from Hartford, ages 5 through 12, for six weeks over the summer at its campsite in Farmington.

Also, Our Piece of the Pie, Inc., a nonprofit organization that works with at-risk and disadvantaged youth to help them obtain college degrees or vocational certification, recently elected Robinson & Cole attorney Jamie M. Landry to its board of directors. Landry practices in the firm's litigation section.

Canalis earns national award

Ernesto Canalis, director of research at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and a professor in the departments of medicine and orthopedic surgery at UConn's School of Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2012 Lawrence G. Raisz Award for contributions to research in bone metabolism by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. The Raisz Award recognizes a society member for outstanding achievements in preclinical and translational research.

Harris honored for pro bono work

Rick Harris, a partner at Day Pitney in New Haven, recently received a Pro Bono Award from the Connecticut Bar Association for his work in 2011 representing abused and neglected children in partnership with Lawyers for Children America, where he currently serves as president of the organization's national board of directors. The CBA Pro Bono Award recognizes legal professionals who demonstrate a dedication to the provision of pro bono legal services.
