The owner of Danbury Hospital, Nuvance Health, announced Wednesday that it has agreed to merge with Northwell Health, forming an integrated, two-state healthcare organization.
Nuvance Health operates Norwalk Hospital, Sharon Hospital and Danbury Hospital’s New Milford campus in Connecticut. It also runs Northern Dutchess Hospital, Putnam Hospital and Vassar Brothers Medical Center in New York.
Nuvance has dual headquarters in Danbury and Poughkeepsie, New York.
Pending regulatory approval, it would combine its operations with Northwell, which is headquartered in New Hyde Park, New York.
“By joining forces with Northwell Health, we are taking a giant leap forward in our shared mission to enhance the quality, accessibility and equity of the healthcare we provide to our communities,” said Dr. John M. Murphy, president and CEO of Nuvance. “This agreement enables us to make significant improvements to health outcomes for community hospitals and to deliver unparalleled care and drive positive change in the healthcare landscape.”
According to the announcement, the new regional system will “bring greater access to primary, specialty and hospital care through a diverse network of combined 14,500 providers and over 1,000 sites of care, including 28 hospitals.”
Northwell will make significant investments in Nuvance Health, the announcement states.
Northwell is New York’s largest healthcare provider with 21 hospitals, about 900 outpatient facilities and more than 12,000 affiliated physicians. It has 85,000 employees.
Nuvance Health in fiscal year 2022 reported a $50.9 million operating loss and $66.2 million overall loss in Connecticut, according to the latest financial data available from the Office of Health Strategy.
Nuvance reported operating losses in three out of four fiscal years, from 2019 to 2022, OHS data shows. It reported an overall loss in only 2022 during that time period.
