CT housing permits down 14% in June

Connecticut’s leading indicator for new housing demand eased in June, as nearly 14% fewer building permits were issued during the third full month of COVID-19-related shutdowns, new data shows.

There were 283 single- and multifamily construction permits issued last month in 104 towns and cities, down from 327 permits issued in June 2019, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development.

That marks the lowest number of homebuilding permits approved during the month of June since 2010, data show. June's homebuilding report is a stark contrast to May, when housing starts more than doubled in May compared to the year-ago period.

Among communities sampled in June, the greatest number of permits were issued in Vernon (39 permits), Greenwich (17), Norwalk and Milford (16), Ellington (12), Southington (11) and Danbury (9).

For the year, there have been 2,186 housing permits issued in the state, up 4.1% from 2,099 issued at this time in 2019. New Haven has had the largest number of permits issued year to date, at 690, followed by Fairfield (114), Shelton (82), Milford (77), Stamford (65), Vernon (64) and Norwich (62).
