CT jobless rate lower in July

Connecticut’s unemployment rate ticked down to 3.6 percent in July, as employers shed 100 net jobs, according to the state Department of Labor (DOL).

Private-sector employment decreased by 700 jobs during the month, while the  government sector (which also includes casinos and public colleges) grew by 600.

In all, there were 69,100 unemployed state residents, seasonally adjusted, the agency said.
Job gains in the government, information and education/health supersectors were outpaced by losses in leisure and hospitality, manufacturing, professional services and construction.

The state unemployment rate has matched the national rate for three consecutive months.

Since 2012, the state jobless rate has been higher than the national rate more often than not.

Connecticut has still not recovered all of the jobs it lost in its 2008-2010 recession, remaining 24,400 positions short, though the private sector has recovered its portion of the recessionary losses.

DOL on Thursday also revised its initial June job-loss estimate, from a loss of 1,400 jobs to a loss of 800. The jobless rate for that month remained at 3.7 percent.
