The commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Labor has resigned.
Glenn Marshall submitted his resignation as labor commissioner on June 29, citing family reasons. Gov. Dannel Malloy named Marshall the labor commissioner in January 2011, when Marshall was working as president of the Carpenters Union Local 210.
Deputy Commissioner Dennis Murphy will be acting commissioner until a replacement is named following a commissioner search. Murphy was named deputy the same day Marshall was named commissioner, as Murphy worked as a neutral labor arbitrator and was seen as a balance against Marshall's union background.
When Malloy named Marshall the commissioner, the governor cited Marshall's reputation as a respect leader in the labor and business communities. On Tuesday, Malloy said the labor department made significant progress in Marshall's 18 months as commissioner.
