There are over a dozen applicants vying for the opportunity to administer the rollout of sports betting in Connecticut if it is eventually legalized, state officials announced this week.

According to the Connecticut Lottery Corp., 15 entities responded to its request for qualifications, issued on April 12, seeking “experienced sports betting solution providers for online and retail sports wagering systems and services.”

“We are pleased to see significant interest from companies who would like to partner with the CLC to bring our online and retail sports betting offering to market,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, chairman of the Connecticut Lottery Corp. “Our staff and board will now begin a process of carefully reviewing the qualifications of the submitting parties as we work towards choosing the right partner in this important initiative for our state.”

The Connecticut Lottery is expected to hear presentations from respondents meeting the agency’s standards, and finalists will be invited to submit formal business plans.

Regulated sports betting and online gaming — debated for years as a means to boost state tax revenues — moved one step closer to reality last month when Gov. Ned Lamont signed a deal with the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribal nations laying out a tax framework for expanded gambling options.

The agreement must be approved by the General Assembly and by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The Connecticut Lottery has said it expects the expanded gaming options to be administered through online and mobile platforms, as well as through up to 15 retail locations, including in Hartford and Bridgeport.
