Fresh data from the Connecticut Insurance Department shows that insurers here paid out more money for medical malpractice claims in 2017, despite there being fewer claims closed.
Companies required to submit the data to CID -- including insurance carriers, captive insurers and self-insured entities -- reported paying a total of $193.6 million in payments to malpractice beneficiaries in 2017.
That was up from $174.4 million in 2016, but down from $211.2 million in 2015, according to CID.
A total of 515 malpractice claims closed in 2017, and plaintiffs received a payment in 57.7 percent of cases. The average payout was just under $651,883, up from $620,524 in 2016.
The report doesn’t show how many new claims there are in a given year. Some of the 2017 closed claims could be from recent medical incidents, but more arose from incidents that are years old, CID said.
