AT&T will equip trains on Connecticut’s New Haven Line with up-to-date broadband technology meant to enhance and speed up internet service on riders’ mobile devices.

The investment is part of a public-private partnership between the company and the state. As part of the agreement, the state Department of Transportation will work with AT&T to install the company’s technology along the rail corridor from New Haven to Greenwich, which AT&T says will improve data coverage and speeds, Gov Ned Lamont said Monday.

AT&T will pay for 100 percent of the installation, a spokesman for Lamont said.

“Here in Connecticut, we are thinking about infrastructure differently than other states, and that includes access to high-speed internet networks,” Lamont said. “By partnering with telecommunications companies like AT&T and giving them the ability to install their necessary equipment on state property, we can expand internet access to … commuters of our rail lines.”

AT&T is now installing 4G equipment, but can upgrade that to 5G as technology advances and customers demand calls for it, according to Lamont’s office.

The New Haven Line, which runs from New Haven to Vernon, N.Y., typically boasts annual ridership of about 40 million passengers.

John Emra, President of AT&T Connecticut, said the partnership will mean improved wireless service immediately, while allowing room for further technological advances.

“AT&T’s network enhancements along the New Haven Line will greatly benefit commuters today and also lay the foundation for the next generation of technology,” Emra said.
