Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network has named Quinnipiac University’s dean of communications as its new chief executive.
Connecticut Public’s board of trustees on Thursday afternoon announced the appointment of Mark G. Contreras as its CEO and president. He will succeed longtime CEO Jerry Franklin, who led the network for 30-plus years. Contreras will begin work March 5, with Franklin assisting the transition until he retires June 30.
Connecticut Public says Contreras has led several media companies through digital transformations, including Calkins Media, where he was CEO. Contreras also previously held top volunteer leadership roles at the News Media Association and the American Press Institute.
He’s currently a fellow of the Henry Crown Fellowship program at The Aspen Institute, and serves on the board of directors of GFR Media in Puerto Rico and Woodward Communications Inc. in Iowa.
A native of Minneapolis and later Chicago, Contreras earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Chicago and an MBA from the Harvard Business School in Boston.
“We are confident that Mark Contreras has the perfect combination of experience and skills to lead and grow this organization at a pivotal time for media companies and broadcast journalism in general,” said Tom Barnes, Connecticut Public’s board and search committee chairman.
Connecticut Public operates WNPR radio and Connecticut Public Television at 1049 Asylum Ave. in Hartford.
