Connecticut is one of the worst states in the nation for renters, according to a new report ranking the rent-to-income ratio of residents across the country.
According to a new report from Consumer Affairs, an online research company that provides user review data for products and companies, Connecticut is the eighth worst state for renters. While Connecticut doesn’t have the highest rent overall, low housing vacancy rates cause challenges for those looking for affordable renting opportunities.
According to the organization, overall median rent in Connecticut is $1,260 while the state’s median income is $83,771.
This is a far cry from the top states for renters: North Dakota and South Dakota. These two states have median rent of $853 per month and $809 per month, respectively, with median annual incomes of $66,519 and $66,143 for residents.
Connecticut isn’t the only Northeastern state in the top 10 worst for renters list. Massachusetts came in at No. 2, right after California, and New York ranked fifth worst while New Jersey came in at 10th worst.
According to Consumer Affairs, the new study was calculated by combining the following factors: median gross rent as a percentage of household income; median rent prices; cost of living index; average monthly electric bills; housing vacancy rates; renter’s insurance premiums; unemployment rates; and tenant-friendly laws and regulations.
