The state’s Department of Economic and Community Development has won a $1.25-million grant to study the impact of cuts to federal defense contract spending on the state and New England, Gov. Dannel Malloy’s office announced.
DECD will work with the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology in East Hartford on the initiative, which has been named the Regional Aerospace and Defense Exchange. It will examine the impact of the federal budget sequester and the drawdown of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Connecticut defense contracts totaled nearly $12.7 billion in 2012, according to the Defense Technology Initiative.
In 2011, the contracts generated nearly $859 million in state and local tax revenue and directly employed approximately 40,000 workers, according to Malloy.
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy said in a statement that he and other politicians will use the study to make the case in Congress for continued defense funding to Connecticut manufacturers.
The study will also examine what skills training is needed to sustain the workforces of area defense companies.
