CT university plans Middle East expansion

CONTRIBUTED University of New Haven President Jens Frederiksen (front, second from left) signs a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabian officials.

The University of New Haven plans to expand into the capital city of one of the United States’ most prolific exporters: Saudi Arabia.

The West Haven-based school said in an announcement that it is the first foreign entity to apply for a higher-education license from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to open a branch in the country.

The University of New Haven’s campus in Riyadh would open in fall 2026 and serve 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students, according to a joint announcement.

It would feature a College of Business and Digital Innovation, a College of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing, and a College of Arts and Applied Sciences.

The University of New Haven has signed a memorandum of understanding with several agencies in Saudi Arabia, according to the announcement.

The international campus would “deliver transformative student outcomes,” maximize ROI for graduates and support Saudi Arabia's efforts to boost private-sector participation in higher education and to diversify its economy, the announcement states.

Saudi Arabia is known for its substantial exports of crude and refined petroleum to the United States.

Students would have access to the University of New Haven’s campuses in West Haven and Tuscany, Italy.

"The University of New Haven is proud to have been an active supporter of higher education in Saudi Arabia for over 20 years, both within the Kingdom and on our Connecticut campus," said Jens Frederiksen, president of the university. "Our focus on preparing a dynamic global workforce makes Saudi Arabia a natural partner.”

The agreement comes at a time when there has been an increase in U.S.-Saudi joint research, according to the U.S. Mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
