Connecticut technology maker Zygo Corp. won a large order to assemble high-precision optics at its Middlefield and Richmond, Calif., plants for the upgraded Virgo gravitational wave project in Italy.

The precise order amount wasn't disclosed for Zygo's components that will comprise the newest version of the European Advanced Virgo project, near Pisa, Italy.

Advanced Virgo is an upgrade of the Virgo detector, a highly sensitive instrument used to explore a volume of universe 1,000 times larger than the constellation Virgo.

The ultimate goal of this high-end scientific instrument is the detection of gravitational waves originating from cosmic sources as predicted by Albert Einstein, Zygo said.

The company's German division, ZygoLOT GmbH, procured the order.
