CVS expands telehealth offering to CT

Telehealth, which uses technology to facilitate remote doctor’s appointments, has been a growing industry in Connecticut for years, and now CVS Health wants in.

CVS, which acquired Hartford-based Aetna for $69 billion last year, announced Wednesday that its MinuteClinic Video Visit service is now available to residents here.

Video visits are mainly intended for patients two years old and older who need treatment for a minor illness, injury or skin condition, CVS said.

The offering accompanies CVS’ other efforts, including its in-store MinuteClinics, to be viewed as a provider of healthcare.

Launched last year in a select number of states, the video service -- initiated through a computer or the CVS Pharmacy mobile app -- has now reached 26 states. Patients will be able to access a licensed healthcare provider at any hour.

The service is also intended to send business to a brick-and-mortar MinuteClinic location, should the provider deem it necessary.

CVS has several MinuteClinic locations in Connecticut, including in Glastonbury, Avon, Rocky Hill, South Windsor, Bristol and Chesire, among others, according to its website.

A video visit costs $59. No health plans cover the service yet, but CVS said it hopes to change that in the coming months.

It’s working with telemedicine company Teladoc to provide the service. The two companies have been developing telehealth offerings together since 2015.
