CVS Health made a splash last year when it spent $10.6 billion to acquire Chicago-based Oak Street Health, deepening its foothold in primary care.
Oak Street Health, which focuses on Medicare patients, said at the time of the deal it employed approximately 600 primary care providers in 169 medical centers across 21 states. But it didn’t have any Connecticut locations.
That’s about to change.
CVS by the end of this year plans to open three Oak Street Health centers within existing pharmacy locations in New Haven, Waterbury and Bridgeport, the company confirmed to the Hartford Business Journal.
CVS has also submitted plans to the Hartford Planning and Zoning Commission to partially convert its Hartford pharmacy at 150 Washington St. into an Oak Street Health clinic. A third of the 10,957-square-foot building will be preserved as a CVS pharmacy, but the rest will be converted into an Oak Street clinic that will include 16 exam rooms with a central nurse care station, according to the project application, which still needs city approval.
There will also be a small lab for collecting patient samples, employee break room, and storage closets.
Oak Street Health’s website lists the New Haven location at 158 Amity Road, and Waterbury at 2000 North Main St.
“As part of our strategy to create new sources of value in health care delivery, particularly with Medicare patients, we are opening Oak Street Health centers side-by-side with CVS Pharmacy locations in a number of markets around the country,” the company said in a statement.
Oak Street Health’s website said the company currently operates more than 200 centers across 25 states. The company said it plans to open 25 new U.S. locations within CVS pharmacies by the end of the year.
Oak Street will be the latest new primary care entrant in Connecticut.
Walgreens-backed physician group VillageMD last year acquired Rocky Hill-based Starling Physicians, one of central Connecticut’s largest physician groups.
Amazon-owned One Medical, a membership-based primary health care provider with digital and in-office services, last year debuted its first Connecticut location in Darien, and has plans to open several more offices in the state.
