Delta Dental of Connecticut said it's adding a new benefit for members with special healthcare needs.

Effective Jan. 1, 2024, group-covered members of any age with a qualifying special healthcare need will be eligible for additional dental examinations and/or consultations; up to four dental cleanings in a benefit year; and treatment delivery modifications (including nitrous oxide and anesthesia) necessary for dental staff to provide oral health care to patients with sensory sensitivities, behavioral challenges, severe anxiety or other barriers to treatment.

Special healthcare needs include any physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional impairment or limiting condition that requires medical management, healthcare intervention, and/or use of specialized services or programs, according to Delta Dental.

In April, Delta Dental announced it awarded the University of Connecticut’s School of Dental Medicine with a $250,000 grant to expand services for patients with special healthcare needs.

The three-year grant enables UConn to hire faculty, provide training, offset dental expenses and offer more flexible hours to treat patients, Delta Dental said.
