Max Restaurant Group will close Trumbull Kitchen in downtown Hartford for the winter after Saturday's dinner service.
The decision was made due to dramatically reduced activity in downtown Hartford, Max founder Richard Rosenthal said. The restaurant group, which owns eight eateries in Connecticut and Massachusetts, plans to reopen Trumbull Kitchen this spring.
“As downtown Hartford’s major employers have eliminated business travel and pivoted to remote work, business at Trumbull Kitchen has been significantly reduced,” Rosenthal said. “We want to make certain that Trumbull Kitchen is prepared to welcome our guests and friends back once the pandemic passes and the energy and vitality of downtown Hartford returns.”Max Downtown, located about a block from Trumbull Kitchen, will remain open through the winter, and will feature a tavern menu that includes popular items from the temporarily shuttered restaurant, Rosenthal said. Trumbull employees will have an opportunity to work at one of Max's other eateries.
The announcement came a couple weeks after Gov. Ned Lamont tightened restrictions for indoor dining, but reversed an order that would have put the kibosh on outdoor structures for restaurants, which would have effectively ended outdoor dining for every restaurant in the state.
Under current restrictions, restaurants must end service by 9:30 p.m., and close by 10 p.m. Capacity is limited to 50% (from the 75% previously allowed), and parties must sit at least six feet from each other (or be separated by non-porous barriers). A maximum of eight people will be allowed to sit at each table.
